FIR colours and SEDs of nearby galaxies observed with Herschel*

چکیده
We present infrared colours (in the 25−500 μm spectral range) and UV to radio continuum spectral energy distributions of a sample of 51 nearby galaxies observed with SPIRE on Herschel. The observed sample includes all morphological classes, from quiescent ellipticals to active starbursts. Active galaxies have warmer colour temperatures than normal spirals. In ellipticals hosting a radio galaxy, the far-infrared (FIR) emission is dominated by the synchrotron nuclear emission. The colour temperature of the cold dust is higher in quiescent E-S0a than in star-forming systems probably because of the different nature of their dust heating sources (evolved stellar populations, X-ray, fast electrons) and dust grain properties. In contrast to the colour temperature of the warm dust, the f 350/ f 500 index sensitive to the cold dust decreases with star formation and increases with metallicity, suggesting an overabundance of cold dust or an emissivity parameter β <2 in low metallicity, active systems.

Far-infrared constraints on the contamination by dust-obscured galaxies of high-z dropout searches
The spectral energy distributions (SED) of dusty galaxies at intermediate redshift may look similar to very high-redshift galaxies in the optical/near infrared (NIR) domain. This can lead to the contamination of high-redshift galaxy searches based on broad-band optical/NIR photometry by lower redshift dusty galaxies because both kind of galaxies cannot be distinguished. The contamination rate c...
متن کاملConstraints on the Accuracy of Photometric Redshifts Derived from BLAST and Herschel/SPIRE Sub-mm Surveys
More than 150 galaxies have been detected in blank-field millimetre and sub-millimetre surveys. However the redshift distribution of sub-mm galaxies remains uncertain due to the difficulty in identifying their optical-IR counterparts, and subsequently obtaining their spectroscopic emission-line redshifts. In this paper we discuss results from a Monte-Carlo analysis of the accuracy with which on...
متن کاملThe local FIR Galaxy Colour-Luminosity distribution: A reference for BLAST, and Herschel/SPIRE sub-mm surveys
We measure the local galaxy far-infrared (FIR) 60-to-100μm colour-luminosity distribution using an all-sky IRAS survey. This distribution is an important reference for the next generation of FIR–submillimetre surveys that have and will conduct deep extra-galactic surveys at 250–500μm. With the peak in dust-obscured star-forming activity leading to present-day giant ellipticals now believed to o...
متن کاملFar-infrared colours of nearby late-type galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey⋆⋆⋆
We study the far infrared (60–500 μm) colours of late-type galaxies in the Herschel Reference Survey, a K-band selected, volume limited sample of nearby galaxies. The far infrared colours are correlated with each other, with tighter correlations for the indices that are closer in wavelength. We also compare the different colour indices to various tracers of the physical properties of the target...
متن کاملHerMES: Far infrared properties of known AGN in the HerMES fields*
Nuclear and starburst activity are known to often occur concomitantly. Herschel-SPIRE provides sampling of the far-infrared (FIR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of type 1 and type 2 AGN, allowing for the separation between the hot dust (torus) and cold dust (starburst) emission. We study large samples of spectroscopically confirmed type 1 and type 2 AGN lying within the Herschel Multi-tie...
